Dance On Camera Workshop with Nic Sandiland

The workshop gives an introduction into the key skills and concepts behind film production with an emphasis on non-narrative movement-based content. Sessions are aimed primarily at participants from a dance background and focus on such issues as: rethinking composition for the screen as opposed to the stage, working with video cameras, editing, cinematic languages, non-linear time, sound and Foley, and post-production techniques.

Participants are taught how to work with cameras and use editing software and are encouraged to produce a short dance-film as part of the workshop.

A wide-range of contextual dance films are shown as part of the workshop.

Nic Sandiland is a UK based artist whose work explores new choreographic forms through installation, performance and film. He originally trained as an electronics engineer before studying dance and performance in the late 80s. His work has been commissioned by the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican Arts Centre, Sadler’s Wells Theatre and is a regular collaborator with choreographers Yael Flexer and Rosemary Lee. His film work has been shown worldwide and regularly broadcast on UK TV (Channel 4).

Nic taught on the MA dance for camera at LCDS and is currently a senior lecturer in fine art at Middlesex University.
